2002-03-07 Bitchcraft has played its first out of Newcastle show, bustin' out to play a Scooter gig. I was glad to be returning to Scooter, cuz its a great environment - these shows are awesome. There would be a crowd, that was for sure, cuz Scooter always has a crowd, and the crowd is hell keen everytime. The other 'craft ladies were a bit nervous about their show in the big smoke, afraid we wouldn't be trendy enough and all that, being rough as guts and from Newcastle. Secretly, I knew we'd go down a treat... The week before the gig, it was decided to do some Bitchcraft tshirts. We had no actual supplies to do so, but the didgy option opened itself up and we took it. It was deemed that I was the most arty in the band, as I was selected to draw a logo. It was too hard - I am usually surrounded by arty types and NEVER have to be the arty one. For ages, I was truly lost, drawing crappy letters that did nothing to achieve a logo. After 24 hours of practise, I came up with something we could use. I drew it onto a manilla folder and cut it out with a cutting knife. Then we rounded up some spray paint - black and silver. I bought some tshirts from the op shop, Nadia had some lying around. ONly a couple of nights before the show, Nadia and I set up a workshop in her kitchen and sprayed away onto the shirts, making about 12 and having them hang all over her kitchen. Success!! Finally!! The big day came and we left in the afternoon for sydney with a van load full of 8 of us, going on down to terrorise the Sydney crewz. It was a pretty tame ride down - the van was sooooooo heavy with 8 people and a guitar amp - and we arrived quite early. WE all just hung around, some of the girls started drinking, since we were in a pub, I got some food. Being back in Newtown certainly isn't that great. The suburb is almost completely taken over by apartments, delis and trendy dogs. After some quieter acts (Jo Daniels and Glue Baby) we were ready to rock. Simone started our set with "yeh, we're not trendy, we're from Newcastle" and off we went. The fabbo scooter crowd danced, jumped about and made good noises between songs. The set went off, and by all accounts we were a hit. I heard one girl saying to Simone "Wow, you realy know how to, er, move". And that she does. Another girl I knew from computery geeky community stuff came and said that she had thought I was just a geek, but then that I was also a rock bitch! Her idea of me was changed a bit! My old mate Danny said Bitchcraft were different to what he expected a band I was in to be like. How True! Everyone was asking me what I was doing after the show, as we had a Novocastrian posse of 8 to co-ordinate. I said I was gonna stay until the end (Fiona Beverage were great) and then we would all stand around the van for awhile wondering what to do. Sure enough, at about 9pm, there were about 15 people standind around my van wondering what to do! Most decided to stay in the big smoke and get drunk, just drummer Janice and her mate Zack came back to Newie. The trip back was quicker (the van felt so svelte after the ride down full of people) and quiter (Janice and Zack promptly fell asleep). Since that gig we have been offered a couple of Sydney things and we are going to Wooloongong in a week or so! Hooray! And we bought a screen to have our logo design put on it, to make proper tshirts...stay tuned... **************************************** This gig happened a couple of weeks ago. Last night we played at the Cambridge in Newie, but are really looking forward to playing there on Friday nite as part of International Womens Day. I have to talk about how much I have been loving the beach and also the ocean baths. The water is friggin' 26 degrees at the moments!! Tropicale!! |
