2003-12-08 Big weekend for the 'craft, with two gigs in two day - feeling very pro.. On Saturday night we had our first "we put it on all by ourselves" show - usually we have been asked by other bans/gog organisers to play. We have never made our own show. Not that we are that good at it, I didn't really do any promo but for a few posters around. But they were cool posters, one with Burt Reynolds (by Simi) and one with Goran from Criminal Intent (done my me). Simone and I did the poster run on a cold Monday night, grappling with rice glue and trying to stick posters to stuff, before we get over it and bail home. I'm a bit of a poster run wuss, a bit afraid of getting in trouble but I still get out there and hope for the best. Nods and I got to the venue, the wonderful (and still not closed down) Hunter on Hunter quite early and put up some decorations - some nice gold fringing on the back of the stage and hung curly ribbon from the dancefloor ceiling. Nice ambience, and the Hunter had never looked so cheery. Still the only band members to arrive, Nods and I then sat on the door, waiting for punters to pay their $4 and painting our nails. I couldn't open the money tin at first, as I waited for my bright pink nail polish to dry. In respect to DJ Dogdey doing a 'Denim Disco" set for us later in the night, the band had decided to wear 'double denim' which meant denim top, denim bottom. I wore denim shorts and a denim vest - stellar! Creeping Jesus played first, with their quick paced punk stuff. Sample line "I didn't come here to make friends and I'll leave without any" or something similar. Then we played, and I think we were quite good. Whipped out a new track, "Manhunt" which I really like. Simone spent the tail end of the set screaming whilst lying on the floor, her head hanging over the side of the stage. Nods did the splits again, and I missed it, as usual, since I am too busy posing all over the joint. Though, I should have a photo soon of Nods doing the splits and will have it on the website. DJ Dodgey was next and he had the dancefloor pumping! As one happy punter said to me "It's great to be able to dance with the band after the gig! It should happen at every show!". Nice call. We all frugged to tunes such as Push It, This Beat is Technotronic and a fucked up mash of Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson. Dodgey always gets the crowd pumping, especially when he goes on after midnight, everyone is a drunk enough to take a chance on the dancefloor - even the dudes! I was annoyed by the behaviours of one small posse of dudes, who didn't have manners and were kind of bugging me, trying to pul down my knee socks and at one point, getting way to close to me. Oh! And calling me 'bum girl'. Never an attractive call... Sunday saw the advent of the 4th (I think) V8 ball, held at the Lass O'Gowrie. The posters proclaim "formal dress welcome" and we, as a band, go the frocks every year, Some of the bands also went formal, but no one in the crowd did. I arrived quite early and was first there, except for Gilli, who had not worn formal gear. I felt hideously overdressed until Nods and the others showed up in their formal threads. Then its was much more fun! Snelvis played first, yet another of Newcastle's kind of humerous country bands. Don't know what is in the water here, but there are a few of those. Australian Beef Week Show were also playing... We played at 4.30pm in the arvo and a pub in the arvo semi-full of Sunday drinkin' punters is always a pleasure. It was a good crowd, and people bring kids to the Lass. Today we saw all of Nod's girls playing in the beergarden and Geoff (Mullard, who recorded our CD for us) had his new baby Vivian there. Too cute! As we were playing Nod's girls would escape the clutches of their Dad, Muzza, and come into the band area with their hands over their ears, gravitating towards Mum. A case of "Not now dear, Mummy's rockin'" I very much enjoyed rockin' in my floor length pink, red-carpet stylee frock. |
